Tech Trail

This year’s Ocean Energy Europe Conference & Exhibition will once again feature a Tech Trail, an exhibition of real ocean energy machines and machine parts.

The Trail will feature technology from OEE members: SKF‘s fully integrated power train mode, HydroQuests OceanQuest demo turbine, CorPower Ocean‘s test buoey, Seaturns tank test device and Minesto‘s Dragon 12 model.

Wish to be included in the Tech Trail? Contact us for more information on how to feature your technology.

HydroQuest - OceanQuest turbine

The OceanQuest turbine, developed and optimized by HydroQuest over 15 years, is designed to withstand harsh tidal conditions, operating efficiently in high-speed, turbulent currents like those at Le Raz Blanchard, France. It features no active components, such as pitch or yaw systems, reducing maintenance needs. Its unique square shape allows for high power output while leaving space above for vessels. A 1MW prototype was successfully demonstrated in Brittany between 2019 and 2021, achieving a remarkable 100% availability. Based on this success, the second-generation 2.8MW model offers increased efficiency and reliability, with a lighter design to simplify deployment and reduce operational costs.

In 2028, six OceanQuest turbines will be installed as part of the Flowatt project, a 17MW tidal farm at Le Raz Blanchard, which will operate for 20 years. HydroQuest aims to continue maturing and demonstrating subsea tidal energy technology, positioning the OceanQuest turbine competitively in the expanding global tidal energy market.

SKF

SKF will present a 1:8 scaled dynamic model of the SKF fully integrated powertrain for advanced tidal stream turbine projects.

With decades of experience in the wind, marine, hydroelectric, and offshore industries, SKF leverages its technical expertise and innovative capabilities to tackle ocean energy challenges.

As a turnkey supplier for tidal turbine manufacturers, SKF integrates solutions to create multi-platform, holistic systems tailored to specific technical requirements, enabling the generation of competitive and clean electricity from tidal forces.

Wave and tidal energy are set to play a crucial role in the future sustainable energy mix. SKF is uniquely positioned to contribute to this exciting journey, from prototype testing to commercial large-scale array deployment.

Innovation for a Better Tomorrow

Seaturns

Founded in Bordeaux, France, in 2015, SEATURNS has developed an innovative, and cost-effective wave energy solution to meet the urgent global demand for sustainable and renewable energy in the ocean power sector.

SEATURNS wave energy technology is centered around an innovative floating cylinder that converts wave motion into electricity. This patented technology delivers optimal performance while simplifying offshore operations and reducing costs. With full-scale testing scheduled for 2025, SEATURNS is entering a new phase of development aimed at accelerating the industrial rollout of its technology, with the first pilot farms planned as a key milestone toward broader commercial deployment.

SEATURNS provides equipment for off-grid or microgrid solutions and utility-scale wave energy farms, producing renewable power for national grids and heavy industries such as data centers, green hydrogen production, and desalination. With its advanced power solution, SEATURNS targets Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in urgent need of affordable and clean energy, European nations as well as leading countries like Canada, Australia, South Africa, Chile all committed to reducing global electrical carbon intensity.

CorPower Ocean - 1/4 Scale

CorPower Ocean is a turnkey supplier of wave energy systems, enabling our customers to generate clean electricity from ocean waves.

Wave energy brings stability to a future powered entirely by renewables, for generations to come.

The tech trail will feature a 1/4 scale model of our 300kW CorPower C4 Wave Energy Converter – deployed at full-scale in northern Portugal.

Our Wave Energy Converters are of point absorber type, with a heaving buoy on the surface absorbing energy from ocean waves. The buoy is connected to the seabed using a tensioned mooring system.

Minesto - Dragon 12

Minesto is a leading marine energy technology company with the mission to minimise the global carbon footprint of the energy industry by enabling commercial power production from the ocean.

Minesto’s tidal energy Dragons are lightweight, scalable modular power plants that generate electricity from low-flow tidal streams and ocean currents by a unique, patented flight principle, operating cost-effectively and providing the energy mix with 100% predictable baseload.

The tech trail will feature a scale model of our Dragon 12 tidal plant, with 1.2MW rated power – connected to the grid and producing electricity in the Faroe Islands.

Minesto was founded in 2007 and has operations in Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Wales, and Taiwan.
